Chinese Language Center
Course Information
Our center offer various Chinese language programs, including the "Quarter-Based Chinese Language Program," the "Short-Term Chinese Language Program," and the "Chinese Language Summer Camp." The course content for each program is outlined as follows:
1. Quarter-Based Chinese Language Program
This program is designed for foreign students who are interested in learning Chinese. It follows a quarter-based system, with each term lasting 12 weeks and comprising 15 hours of instruction per week, totaling 180 hours of required language courses. The program aims to establish a solid foundation in Chinese language proficiency.
The curriculum covers four core language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—across basic, intermediate, advanced, and fluent levels. It also incorporates cultural courses featuring Taiwan’s local characteristics, Chinese culture, and traditional customs, providing a rich blend of humanities and the arts. In addition, elective courses in applied Chinese are offered, focusing on daily life, travel, and business contexts.
The Quarter-Based Chinese Language Program consists of two main components: general Chinese language courses and elective courses, which are detailed as follows:
(1) General Chinese Language Courses
Courses are conducted based on students’ proficiency levels, using a placement system to ensure appropriate instruction. Upon enrollment, students are required to take an oral or written placement test and are then assigned to one of nine levels across three main categories: Beginner, Intermediate/Advanced, and Fluent/Proficient. Classes are taught primarily in Chinese, using both Zhuyin (Bopomofo) and Hanyu Pinyin systems.
Chinese language instructors must prepare course objectives, syllabi, teaching schedules, and assessment methods in advance, which serve as the basis for both instruction and evaluation. Emphasis is placed on immersive instruction conducted entirely in Chinese, with a strong focus on speaking practice. Teaching is supplemented with multimedia and instructional materials to help students improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills simultaneously.
In terms of student performance, instructors are required to assess each student before the end of the course based on their test results, class participation, attendance, learning attitude, and progress. Students who pass will receive a certificate of completion issued by the center.
Additionally, Chinese language instructors at the center design mock tests at various levels based on the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) developed by the Steering Committee for the Test of Proficiency–Huayu. These practice tests include speaking, listening, and reading components, with writing included at the advanced level.
To ensure the quality of teaching and learning, remedial instruction is provided for students who show weaker learning outcomes. The center also organizes an after-class tutoring team composed of instructors and trained student assistants ("Mandarin Ambassadors") as a backup teaching force. Students who are unable to keep up with the class progress may schedule additional one-on-one tutoring sessions. At the end of each course, a teaching feedback survey is conducted and analyzed to help instructors continually improve their teaching.
(2) Elective Courses
In addition to the regular curriculum, the center also offers culturally rich elective courses featuring local characteristics, such as philately, folk beliefs, traditional festivals, Chinese calligraphy and painting, storytelling, and the symbolism of turtles and butterflies. Furthermore, various applied Chinese language courses are available, including Practical Chinese for Daily Life, Chinese for Tourism, and Chinese for the Workplace.
-
Practical Chinese for Daily Life:
This course focuses on everyday topics related to food, clothing, housing, and transportation. It emphasizes practical, daily-use Chinese to provide students with diverse and immersive life experiences. Customized teaching materials are developed specifically for the center’s students, incorporating regional vocabulary from the Kaohsiung-Pingtung area—particularly related to daily life, transportation, and shopping. -
Chinese for Tourism:
This course integrates local attractions and natural environments to develop experiential and mobile learning modules such as eco-tourism, temple and historical site tours, hot spring experiences, scenic viewing, and cultural explorations of Hakka communities, military dependents’ villages, new immigrant neighborhoods, and indigenous tribes. Students learn in a relaxed environment while gaining a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s cultural heritage and everyday lifestyle. -
Chinese for the Workplace:
Designed around workplace scenarios across various industries, this course teaches the Chinese language necessary for both daily life and professional settings. The “Chinese for the Workplace” elective emphasizes improving language knowledge and skills while also introducing basic concepts in business culture, cross-cultural communication, and professional etiquette. It aims to help students intending to seek employment in Taiwan become familiar with real-life workplace communication contexts early on.
